About Mama Ghanoushe

Mama Ghanoushe is a 100% gluten free vegetarian café in Hassocks, West Sussex, just 20 minutes outside of Brighton. Our aim is to promote well-being and vitality, and make plant-based food accessible and enjoyable for all.

Through the combining of fresh, colourful, unprocessed ingredients, our food will uplift the mind, heal the body and rejuvenate the spirit. Our nutritious, hearty meals are made with love and passion, and we pride ourselves on providing a welcoming, relaxed environment that will allow you to nurture and nourish both body and mind. We offer hot and cold meals, as well as cakes and raw sugar free treats and a variety of vibrant, fresh juices and blends. A lot of our menu is suitable for vegans or those with dairy intolerances, and we are always happy to adapt and cater for any dietary requirements or preferences. We change our menu seasonally to allow us to use local produce of the highest quality, and our daily specials are always changing so you can guarantee something new and exciting to try with each visit!

We are fully licensed and have a fantastic selection of vegan wines, beers and spirits that were personally selected to complement our menu by South Downs Cellars in Hurstpierpoint, and the premises is available for private hire in the evenings, with bar and catering available if desired.

Why are we called ‘Mama Ghanoushe’?

Ghanoushe means to ‘spoil’ – Baba Ghanoushe is a dish made by the women of the Harem to impress and spoil the Baba (the head of the Harem), to get his favour. The dish is made from smoked aubergine, tahini, garlic and spices. This dish is a favourite with Rachel’s family, and her children call her ‘Mama’, so it was a natural fit for the café to be called Mama Ghanoushe.

About Rachael Burrows, owner of Mama Ghanoushe

Rachael is a Cordon Bleu trained chef and has worked in a variety of settings within the catering industry. She began her career catering for TV and film crews in a variety of locations, including Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Prague and France. She then worked in Paris and Long Island, and finally came back to the UK to live in London, working as Head Chef at Virgin Records Headquarters and then as Directors Chef for two prominent legal firms.

Rachel is a vegetarian and passionate about her family’s health and fitnes. She really wants to share her love of vegetarian food with you so that you too can spoil your deserving bodies!
